ABOUT US
Generation Change is a dynamic partnership of youth social action organisations.
We facilitate a partnership of 17 of the UK’s leading youth social action organisations – who are transforming British society by empowering more than half a million young people each year to take action in thousands of postcodes in every part of the country. Young people on Generation Change programmes are tackling issues ranging from educational disadvantage, bullying and community cohesion to sustainability, homelessness, and age-related isolation.
We facilitate a partnership of 17 of the UK’s leading youth social action organisations – who are transforming British society by empowering more than half a million young people each year to take action in thousands of postcodes in every part of the country. OUR Challenge
Britain needs more young people involved in social action.
The UK has high levels of inequality, decreasing community cohesion, and an ageing population, whilst economic challenges are making it ever more difficult for young people to succeed in life. We believe that the double impact of social action has a role to play in providing solutions to both sets of problems, by simultaneously giving young people a pathway to leadership and self-discovery, and helping them to drive tangible social change.
Many excellent youth social action programmes exist, but there are not enough, there is no continuity between them, it is not clear which programmes are effective, and there is not enough recognition for those that are. There is also no shared understanding of the evidence, and no common reporting framework across our sector, meaning funders struggle to clearly identify best practice, and making it difficult for the achievements of young people to be captured and communicated.

What we can achieve
Our organisations have come together to meet this challenge.
Generation Change members each have a unique role in supporting young people to take social action, but they all share our vision and mission, have recognised that no single organisation can achieve it alone, and are fully committed to practices of collaboration. Our members operate at a sufficient scale and stage of impact to create a critical mass for achieving our goals.
Working together will enable our members to have an impact that is greater than the sum of their parts – what we call collective impact. By collaborating, programmes can be more strategic, more effective, more innovative, and have a bigger impact in society. We have chosen to focus on the following strategic areas:

- Quality: we will catalyse an improvement in the quality of youth social action and help organisations to demonstrate the value of their programmes
- Insight: we will enhance understanding of youth social action, including levels of activity, gaps and opportunities for further impact, and share this knowledge with funders, policy makers and education providers.
- Action: we will provide a platform for collaboration between youth social action and other, related organisations
- Awareness: we will draw attention to the youth social action agenda in the media and with policy makers
How we do it
Generation Change provides three functions that enable this to happen:
- We coordinate delivery and support members to adopt effective practices for collaboration.
- We inform and influence critical stakeholders by giving them access to knowledge and ideas.
- We drive innovation to address strategic barriers to achieving our vision and mission.
